There is a moon inside every human being. Learn to be companions with it.– Rumi
Since the dawn of time, we have felt a magical bond with the Moon, our closest astronomical body. Her power over us is immeasurable. Not only does she keep the Earth on its axial tilt, the Moon’s rhythmic movements mirror the ebb and flow in our own bodies, the growth of plants, and the cycles of life. Furthermore, she ignites our intuition and emotions, inspiring the greatest works of literature, music, poetry, dance and art.
Navigate the Lunar Cycle
In this cosmic drama, the Moon orbits Earth, making a full cycle about every 29.5 days, the length of the entire lunar cycle. As she revolves, she reveals different views of herself, reflecting the Sun’s light.
Although New Moons and Full Moons are the most well known, there are actually 8 lunar phases in a lunar cycle. And these phases reflect the positions of the Sun and the Moon in the sky from our perspective on Earth.
The lunar cycle begins when the Sun and Moon come together (New Moon), climaxes when they oppose each other (Full Moon) and ends right before they unite again (Waning Crescent). Ancient cultures saw this monthly cycle as Luna’s journey from a young Maiden to a Mother and lastly to a wise, elderly Crone.
The New Moon is the beginning of the lunar cycle. New Moons occur when the Moon is perfectly positioned between the Earth and the Sun. The New Moon is a time to let your physical sensations and intuition guide your intention setting for the entire lunar cycle.
A few days after the New Moon, the sky starts to light up as the Moon grows brighter into a crescent shape. One step closer to fullness, your New Moon intentions are starting to manifest. This is the time to keep progressing forward.
When the Moon is in her first quarter phase, she is half full in the sky. At this time your creative energy is at its peak. Use this momentum to take action and manifest your New Moon intentions in tangible form.
The Moon is now almost full, calling on you to make any tweaks. This can be a stressful time so don’t get caught up in controlling every detail. A little uncertainty can make room for pleasant surprises.
When the Moon is on the exact opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, the seeds you planted at the New Moon are materializing in physical form. It’s time to express joyful gratitude to the Universe.
The Waning phase begins with the Full Moon visibly receding from its full luminous form to the New Moon. During this yin phase, practice receiving with gratitude.
The Moon wanes even more in the sky until it is half full. It symbolizes the expanding of consciousness when you can finally see the big picture. This is a time to give back to the community with your unique gifts.
As the cycle winds down to a close, this is a powerful time to receive divine messages that will guide you through the darkness. Reflect on what you have learned about yourself.
What is a Lunar Eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs at the Full Moon when the Sun eclipses the Moon, causing Earth to cast a shadow on her. It is a time when emotional and internal issues in your subconscious are revealed.
