In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.– Albert Camus
Once Upon A Time
there was a trickster god named Loki. Loki’s pranks were notoriously far from innocent. He has ignited deep seated revenge in more than a few souls, one being the stormy giantess, Skadi.
As the story goes, Loki tricked Skadi’s father, Thiazzi, into stealing the apples of immortality from the Aesir. Loki then told the Aesir of his crime, and helped them kill Thiazzi. Talk about back stabbing!
When Skadi heard the news, she marched right up to Asgard in full armour to demand retribution. The gods offered her marriage into the Æsir tribe to make up for her loss. The catch was that she had to choose her husband by his feet alone. Naturally, Skadi picked the god with pedicure status toes.
When her future husband was revealed, it was the god of the sea, Njord, whose feet were washed clean by walking along the crystalline shore.
We all have dark moments in our lives. The Norse goddess of winter, snow, skiing and the hunt teaches us how to navigate the darkness with courage and a wild, untamed spirit.
Skadi gives us the strength needed to move from the dark into the light. When she puts her mind to something, there is no stopping this fierce and determined goddess!
